Northbridge-Brewing-Co-Shanghai-Beer-Tasting(19-of-44)Ken Arrowsmith has recently resurfaced after five years in hibernation. Whilst not a polar bear, he did need some rest and a cool down after the incredible creative stress that comes from 30 years of designing and brewing some of the best beers in Australia.

A master craftsman, Ken has more skill and finesse than any wine maker and loves making a great beer or ale more than breathing. After high school, Ken completed a Bachelor of Applied Science (Chem) at Western Australian Institute of Technology (now Curtin University) and then went on to join the Swan Brewery Co Ltd as an Assistant Chemist.

In the late eighties Ken had a taste of the ‘new’ craft beer movement, working under the guidance of Phil Sexton at Brewtech. He was principally involved in setting up, commissioning and operating a craft brewery at The Old Lion Hotel in North Adelaide.

Returning to the Swan Brewery upon the formation of the Lion Nathan Group in Australia and New Zealand provided Ken with many career opportunities and he was fortunate to fill most operational and technical roles throughout the industry including stints as Operations Director at The Swan Brewery, Tooheys Brewery and South Australian Brewing Company.

As an active member of the Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD), Ken was privileged to Chair the Asia Pacific Section of the Institute and serve on the Strategic Planning Committee. In 2004, he was awarded the prestigious Fellowship of the Institute of Brewing and Distilling.

Outside interests include playing soccer, basketball, kite surfing and tasting beer of all styles and provenance.
